This week's KLPGA event is again taking place from Wednesday - Friday, April 30 - May 2. It is the Phoenix Park Classic. The defending champion, Eun Hee Ji, is now playing on the LPGA tour.

In the first round, a 31 year old journeyman player named Jenny Lee captured a share of the lead by shooting a 5 under par 67.

Ji Yai Shin got out to a so so start, as she often does, shooting a 2 under par 70. Among the top players on tour, Ha Neul Kim produced a 3 under par 69, while among those tied for third one shot back are Hyun Hee Moon and an amateur named Hee Jung Choi. Jimin Jeong is the guest LPGA player in the field this week.

In round two, the 17 year old amateur Hee Jung Choi surprised everyone by taking the lead early on. A whole bunch of KLPGA stars were right on her heels, though, and one of them, Young Ran Jo, popped three straight birdies to join her atop the field.

Eventually, though, it was another player who squeaked into the solo lead: Min Sun Kim. Kim shot a second straight 68 to move to an 8 under total.

Jo finished the day at 7 under, after producing a 67, the best score of the day. 2007 ROY Ha Neul Kim, who shot a 68, was tied at that spot.

Ji Yai Shin? She played better on day two and finished the day with a 5 under total. She is still very much in this tournament, especially considering the relatively green nature of those on top. Jo has won before on tour, once, but Ha Neul Kim and Min Sun Kim haven't yet collected their first win.

First round leader Jenny Lee is one of those sitting at 6 under. Interestingly, a second Min Sun Kim sits tied for 8th at 5 under!

The final round started with a number of very green golfers at the top of the leaderboard. Ji Yai Shin started the day in 8th place, and would not be in one of the final groups on day three. If she were going to win this one, she would need to make a big run up the leaderboard to put pressure on those finishing later than she.

The early mover, however, was LPGA golfer Soo Young Moon. And what a move it was! She shot a blistering 6 under par 30 on the front nine, and added another birdie on the 11th hole to move all the way to 8 under total and the lead. She was killed, however, by a quad bogey on the 16th hole, dropping down to her eventual finish of 4 under total.

As the round continued, a bunch of golfers gathered at 8 under par, including the teenage rookie Hee Jung Choi, one time tour winner Young Ran Jo, and Ji Yai Shin. Shin moved to 8 under thanks to a 2 under front nine and a birdie on 15. But the leader with a few holes to go was none other than ROY Ha Neul Kim, who also shot 2 under on the front nine. She moved to 10 under with a birdie on 12, but a bogey on the par 5 14th dropped her back to 9 under, a one shot lead over Shin.

Meanwhile, the other gals at 8 under one by one made bogey, dropping to 7 under or worse. Shin finished her round at 8 under, and Kim had a one shot lead with a few holes to play. It was now her tournament to lose. But she could afford no mistakes.

Her response? She finished with birdies on the last three holes to absolutely seize the tournament by the scruff of the neck. Her final total of 12 under par gave her a four shot win over Shin, her first ever KLPGA win. She could very easily have choked in the situation she was in, with her first ever win on the line, and instead won as decisively as one can.

Congrats to Ha Neul Kim on a fantastic maiden victory!!

I have to say I'm pretty pumped about Ha Neul Kim breaking through with her first win. She is one of those golfers who always seems to have a smile on her face. I tend to really like the 'happy' Seoul Sisters the most (Ji Yai Shin, Jee Young Lee, Joo Mi Kim, Hee Young Park and Jimin Kang being some of the others), and she is quickly becoming a fave of mine.

The KLPGA season is shaping up to be an interesting one. Ji Yai Shin is still clearly the best player, but you have promising rookies like So Yeon Ryu, Oh Chae Ah and He Yong Choi making noise; Sun Ju Ahn in the midst of a mysterious slump; and now Ha Neul Kim winning at last. I wonder what's going to happen next!?

Congrats to Kim Ha-Neul (Sky or Heaven)! Way to go get that first win! I'm sure this won't be the last we hear from her this year Smile

I wouldn't have minded seeing Soo-Young win this... I think she could use a boost too...

It's great to see young players stepping up and challenging one of their peers before she leaves for the LPGA. And dealing with tough competition on the KLPGA this year will only make Shin that much tougher for next!
